I read in a few comments in blogs, like this the following:
"You Can't Hide Your Friends List From Your Friends,"
Well, that was possible before, until Facebook removed some settings in December 2009
In May 2010 Facebook quietly restore -or at least partially- that function.
Even better, I was able to hide friends and make visible only 'mutual friends' to my friends.
This is what you can try:
Create a few lists, like "School", "Family", "Church" ... you get the idea.
How can you do this?
Go to:
Account > Edit Friends
On the left side, under Lists, click on "Friends"
click on "Create new list" (top center)
Now for each friend, and every time you add a friend, select on the right "Add to list". A friend can be in multiple lists.
Now hide your friends, using the instructions in "How to hide your friends in Facebook"
When I say you can try is because Facebook may have changed their mind by the time you read this
